Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
